What is Deep TMS Therapy and How Does It Work?

Deep TMS is a safe, innovative, non-invasive and effective treatment for depression. The FDA approved Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation as a treatment for depression in 2008, and it has a proven record of success, without the side effects that many pharmaceuticals bring.

Brainsway Deep TMS therapy involves stimulating the left pre-fontal cortex of the brain, an area that can be under-active in patients with depression, with magnetic pulses (similar to an MRI). This regulates neural networks, increases blood flow to that area of the brain and activates nerves that effect depressive moods.

Deep TMS has been proven to be safe during treatment and long-term safety has also been demonstrated in clinical studies. In fact, because the treatment is non-systemic (not impacting the bloodstream) it is a viable treatment for pregnant women.

A helmet, which is outfitted with a metal coil, is sized specifically for your head. This helmet is worn to direct the magnetic stimulation to a specific site. The procedure is performed in the office and no sedation is required. You are awake and alert during the treatment sessions and are able to drive and resume normal activities immediately afterward. The initial visit can last up to an hour while precise measurements are taken for the helmet and your motor threshold is determined. Subsequent visits last 20-30 minutes.

10. “We at Square TMS are excited to announce that we are offering Theta Burst Stimulation (TBS) treatments. TBS is an advanced new technique of magnetic brain stimulation. Similar to our standard Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, it uses magnetic waves much like an MRI to activate the area of the brain associated with depression. Unlike standard TMS, the treatment is much quicker and is a more affordable option for self-pay individuals. Research suggests TBS has a more powerful, lasting effect than TMS and many believe it will be the future standard of brain stimulation treatment. TBS is often more comfortable because of the lower intensity. TBS is considered off-label and as such is not covered by insurance companies; however, Square TMS offers some of the best rates in the Boston area. If you or someone you know is interested in TBS, contact us at 617-916-5069 and find out more.”
