Treatment Overview

  • Every patient receives a free evaluation session with one of our TMS certified providers. If both the patient and the provider feel that TMS is right for the patient, our team immediately begins working on your insurance coverage authorization.
  • Once we receive approval from the patient’s insurance company, we schedule the patient for their Initial Visit. (if the patient’s insurance declines coverage for TMS, we will submit an appeal it the provider deems the treatment necessary)
  • For the Initial Visit and all subsequent Follow Up Visits, patients can wear their everyday clothes, dress comfortably, watch TV, browse their phone or sit mindfully in meditation. Patients are able to drive themselves to and from appointments (for patients that need help making their appointments, we can arrange for a car to pick you up! Ask us how by calling us at 617.916.5069.
  •  During the Initial Visit, our TMS Operator will use guided and personalized measurements to find the area of the patient’s brain that will be targeted throughout their treatment.
  • The Operator then works with the patient to determine the necessary strength of the magnetic pulses, which depends on their individual response.
  • Once the Operator has personalized the location of the helmet and determined the necessary strength of pulses, the patient begins their first treatment.
  • After the Initial Visit, the patient will come back for about 36 Follow Up visits over the course of about 1.5 months (5 days per week)
  • Each follow up session lasts about 20 minutes
  • If necessary, most patients are eligible for retreatment 6 months after they complete their first treatment
  • For maintenance between treatments, many patients come in for a weekly/bi-weekly Theta Burst* session that last about 7 minutes each. Ask one of our TMS Providers if Theta Burst might be right for you.

To help track our patient’s progress throughout their treatment, we use the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) at the beginning, middle and the end of their treatment. The PHQ-9 is a 9-question form that helps quantify the severity of depression on a scale from 0-27. The higher the score, the more severe the depression, while a score of ≤5 deems the patient “not depressed”. Based on data gathered by +120 of our patients, we have seen an average decrease of about 70% in PHQ-9 scores from the patient’s initial treatment to their last.
